how long does install take?
« on: March 11, 2008, 05:16:44 PM »
just got an ihp-120 over the weekend and i plan on installing rockbox tonight. the unit did not come with a charger, but i was able to use 4 AAs to fully charge it. reading the i-river manual, it states you should have the adapter plugged in when you flash the firmware so you don't lose power. how long does the process take? do i need to worry about running down a full charge while doing it?

thanks!

when i first installed Rockbox on my iPod video about 2 years ago, it took me less than 20 mins. Now with the RockboxUtility tool it takes less than 5?

At least that's what it took to install it on my Sansas e250 and c250.

You do need to have it plugged to your computer via USB of course.

The actual flash of the patched original firmware (the crucial bit) takes a minute or two.  Personally, with a full battery I do it without the charger with no hesitation - but I'm not going to tell you to do it just in case, standard disclaimers etc.  Be aware that a bad flash will result in a unit recoverable only with specialist equipment, and iriver will refuse warranty (if indeed a H1x0 can be in warranty still!).  I'm not trying to scare you, but in the very very unlikely case that something goes wrong, I don't want you to blame me/us

bzavala: The installation processes can vary greatly. Please, don't make comments if you're not familiar with the specific process. The H100 series install requires the user actually boot the player into the OF and give it instructions to update itself, after which it will flash itself. If the power fails, at all, during this flash, the units is in essence unrecoverable without specialty hardware.

While a fully charged battery should mean you'll be okay during the flashing process as it is fairly short, be aware that if power *is* lost, your player is unusable.

Oh, and flashing usually requires more battery than the player running in idle mode. Not exactly sure about the h100, just to make you aware of it.

went to update the firmware and in less than 30 seconds the unit shut off. i thought it was too quick and it was finished. hit the power button and there was rockbox! :)

i'm making a charger cable from an old usb cord but haven't done it yet. i just couldn't wait to make this thing a little more user friendly.

thanks to all!
