last time I used it on my ipod 80GB with ca. 6000 songs, it took 45 minutes, iirc
Really? I have at least 2000 songs on my gigabeat and it takes a whole 30 seconds to prepare the album art. Something must be wrong with your setup.

Basically, the iPod is 1/4 the speed of the Gigabeat. But this isn't practical, since far from all the speed is being dedicated to updating, since some of it goes to drawing the screen, and doing other usual tasks. So you probably have something closer to an 6:1 or 7:1 ratio in the speeds simply in terms of MHZ. Then you've got 3 times as many songs. Just that means 10-20 minutes is a reasonable expectation on the iPod. And that's not taking into account that pure MHZ isn't the most reliable definition of speed. Add into that, "6000 songs" and "2000 songs" doesn't tell us the actual ratio of albums and images we're working with, and I'd say there's plenty of elbow room.
