ipod nano 1st gen recording?

Apple swear this is impossible, full-stop, end of story. Is this true? I have a Giffin italk which works superbly with the 2nd and 3rd gen nanos and some ipod videos with the apple firmware, but is entirely incompatible with the 1st gen. Getting this to work would be nice, but if there is any way or device which will work I'm interested.
