iPod Video 60gig 5.5gen
« on: March 05, 2008, 03:58:13 AM »
I have an iPod that my brother broke (no modification done to any part of it rockbox or otherwise) and I am fairly sure the hard drive is broken (frowny face ipod when starting it). I was curious if any of you guys knew of a place I could find that would have replacements for its hard drive and hopefully install it for me because I don't trust myself in replacing anything because i tend to break whatever it is.

I plan on putting rockbox on this iPod because I had it on another one (Nano 2gig) but I lost it and it makes me sad not to have rockbox anymore.

The hard drive may not be dead.  It may simply be corrupted firmware, which should be fixed by booting into emergency disk mode, then doing a "restore" in iTunes.

It could also be that the hard drive isn't connected properly.  If you open it up and fiddle around with it (just unplug/plug it, etc, maybe shake it gently if you've exhausted everything else, as the read head may be stuck) it may start working again.

There are videos on taking apart iPods over here, it's really quite easy.
