160GB ipod Classic HDD in a 5.5 80GB ipod video
« on: March 04, 2008, 09:23:50 PM »
This doesn't exactly have to do with rockbox other than that my ipod is on rockbox, but there's a thread similar to this about iriver hard drives above, and I imagine this is something of interest to people here so I'm guessing it's kosher.  Plus you guys seem more informed than in most places...

I got my hands on a Samsung HS161JQ 160GB drive which came from a 160GB ipod classic, and I tried to hook it up to my 5.5 ipod video 80GB.  The connector fits, but it absolutely does not spin up at all.  The original and new drives are 3.3V, but the original 80GB drive is 0.5A while the 160GB one is 0.4A.  Would that amperage difference preevent it from starting up, or did I just get a dead drive?

The 5.5 ipod uses ZIF 40, while the 160 GB hard drive is CE-ATA.

Have a look at this page www.rockbox.org/wiki/HardDriveReplacement  As afruff23 says you need to get a drive that uses the correct interface 'protocol', not just the same physically.

Bzoinks - I didn't realize there were different zif standards, I thought they were all zif 40.  Is CE-ATA any faster?  What's the advantage?  Is it only so people can't use the drives on the 5.5g line?

So from that chart I guess there are currently no rockbox supported devices that use a CE-ATA drive?  If there is one let me know, and I'll sell my ipod and buy one of those instead.

Nope, no CE-ATA devices as of yet.

Hey, is there such thing as a zif 40 to CE-ATA adapter?   Can't seem to find anything on it, but if you can make a zif to IDE adapter, why not zif to CE-ATA?

Because ZIF40 is a parallel interface while CE-ATA is a serial interface (compare to IDE/ATA and SATA drive in desktop computers). SO while it is possible to make an adapter it is much more complicated adn will require additional electronics

Ah, like a SATA to IDE conversion which requires a board.  So I guess I won't ever be able to use this CE-ATA drive in my ipod 5.5G...

On ebay she goes, thanks guys, DB
