Is anyone else getting more battery life with the latest versions of Rockbox?
« on: March 04, 2008, 05:30:31 PM »
I just upgraded to the latest version two nights ago (my previous version was from December), and have noticed my battery life seems better with the new version than with the previous version I had installed. I don't know how to interpet this. 1. The previous version may have been incorrectly reading the battery usage info, or 2. This newest version on Rockbox has been optimized for peak performance with minimal battery usage. Anyone else getting more mileage with the latest version of Rockbox? BTW I am using a Sansa 280E.

Yes, in mid February (http://svn.rockbox.org/viewvc.cgi?view=rev;revision=16259) some battery saving work went in to SVN greatly improving battery life on portalplayer based targets, which includes the e200.

I did a test of runtime between rockbox and the OF a little while ago (same album on repeat etc.) and got 14:08 in the OF and 16:28 in rockbox!  See www.rockbox.org/wiki/SansaRuntime.

No problems, thanks (on behalf of those more talented than me) for the kind words.

Are the tests on that wiki page conclusive enough to say that rockbox now power manages better than the OF?

What do you mean?  The code gets modified and rebuilt multiple times each day.

No, they are not conclusive.  Ideally we would have current measurements to see exactly how much power is consumed under what circumstances, but the runtime page gives a good indication that under real world use we approach or surpass the OF for the Sansas (I think I'm correct in including the c200), and do a lot better than we did with the later (not 1st to3rd gen inclusive, which we already did better than the OF) iPods (I'm not sure with the H10 if it is more Sansa like or iPod like w.r.t. runtime).

Yes, thanks to those responsible... I last upgraded on Feb 13, not knowing about this fix, and my vague sense has been that my battery life has improved...

The power-saving changes have bumped the battery life of my 60 gig ipod photo from 7.5 hours to 11.5 hours.  Of course, both of those are if you never turn the back-lighting on or flip through menus.  It's an amazing improvement though.
