grey translucent background
« on: January 22, 2008, 08:03:22 PM »
Has anyone succeeded in making a grey transparency like the ones on the zune yet?

I may possibly have them working.  My third or fourth attempt semi succeeded.  I think I know the problem and I'm working on it.  Since I've already discovered how to make the background of the wps show the background of the player (so you can change the background of the wps anytime you feel like it) the next step is to make themes that use transparencies in various shades of grey (I like that on the Zune player).  I'm pretty sure it can be done.

If I get time, I'll toy around with it some more.

Transparent means "you can see through it completely." Clear like glass. Do you perhaps mean translucent, and if so, alpha translucency is not supported.

Yeah I used the wrong word.  I have it working.

There is a way.

I knew that was the wrong word but I couldn't think of translucent for the life of me. ;D

It's not as slick as I would like it to be but I'm still playing with it.   I may decide it isn't presentable at some point and quit with it.  We'll see.

Edit: I included a jpeg of a modified Theme X that I used to insert the translucent rectangle.  You can see it clearly doesn't belong and you can see through it a little.  I think I can expand on this but it still needs work.

What do you think?  Crummy? Good?  It can be used over the backdrop in the wps. Like I said though, it's not perfect by any means.

Edit 2:  I knew "alpha translucency" isn't supported.  I was more or less looking for a workaround.  Didn't mean to sound like you were wrong or anything.  I looked at the post again and realized that didn't come out quite the way I intended.  Didn't mean to offend if I did.

Good job mate. Text placed over the top of that 50% coverage might be a little difficult to read though.

There are a few WPS's that use this type of design element, but to do it properly, they pre-blur the background eg in the actual background image itself, thereby achieving the effect but limiting you to using the same background image. One example of this is the Jclix series of themes.

For what it's worth, I knew what you meant by transparency.

Black text of a significant size may not be too bad.  Maybe a 14 or more.  I'll have to see.

The 50% coverage can be a contrasting color as well which may help.

On that subject, is there a tag to show the text over an image?  I don't see it in the wikki.  Or I may have just overlooked it.  Or maybe there isn't one, in which case there can be no method to use the translucent background.

There would seem to be a way, since there was a post a while back where the person was having trouble getting text to NOT display over an image.

http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=15034.0

I checked it out earlier today on my iPod and it actually looks better on screen than I thought it would.  It looks much better on the iPod than it does on the simulator.  This is good news, now if I can only get text on top of it.  ??  I still don't know if this is possible.

Text is displayed on a screen based off lines. Images are displayed based off coordinates. So you could put 10 lines in between the code to display images in the WPS file and it would show the same images in the same places, but putting 10 lines in between the text code in the WPS file would screw up positions of the text.

In short, text can be placed on images which is a good and bad thing. Mostly good if you have patience.
