Sansa: Disable Database Refresh in OF
« on: February 29, 2008, 01:31:18 AM »
I hope this post isn't inappropriate but:

I'd like to know if there's a way to stop the Sansa OF from rebuilding the database on boot up.  I asked because Rockbox does not yet support file transfer and every time I startup the original firmware to transfer files I have to first wait 5 minutes while it rebuilds the database.

Thanks,
mark

Rockbox already does everything we know how to do to prevent this, but if you have a MicroSD card in, or possibly certain firmware versions, we can't prevent it.

Oh, surprised to know this, I also hate the time-cost non-sense OF database refreshing ... so, could it (preventing the refreshing) work on a Sansa250 with firmware version 1.01.00? If it could, which operations/settings I need to do? I appreciate your help so much.

Now I see something important (if one sees that you started another thread explicitly mentioning that you have a *C*250).

On the c200s Rockbox can not prevent the database refresh because the original firmware behaves a bit different than the e200's original firmware. The only thing you can do is wait for Rockbox's own USB support which is being worked on but noone can tell when it will be ready.

Before booting to the OF, unplug the micro SD card. After the database refresh, plug in the Sansa, wait a moment, then insert the micro SD.

It's a modest improvement, but it helps. :)

If you don't need to boot to original firmware and don't mind using rockbox only, try my solution.

You want to get the original firmware into it's default state where it asks you to choose a language.  You can do this by doing a sansa firmware upgrade/downgrade.

Once it's in this state,  all you need to do is NEVER choose a language.  You'll be able to connect via USB in original firmware without it doing a database refresh.

The main reason I do this is because the sansa firmware doesn't like most of my mp3s and will lock during the db refresh.

I don't know if its due to the firmware or specific bootloader but, on my e280, if i plug in the USB cable with the sansa turned off, then it starts without the database refresh.

BTW, I am using the Sansa e280 with firmware 01.02.18A.  Sorry I didn't included that in the original post.

The latest bootloader is supposed to disable the database refresh automatically.  You may need to update your original firmware first for it to work properly though... I did this a while ago and can't remember the step-by-step instructions, otherwise I'd provide them... There are a few somewhat-helpful threads in the forums already if you search...

Hmm, my OF is the latest version and I just installed RockBox five days ago, so I'm pretty sure I have the latest bootloader (I downloaded it via the link in the installation wiki).  Am I missing something?

Thanks to all,

Please don't hijack threads. Your question has nothing to do with database refresh problems.

Advice taken. I removed the post and put the questions in a new thread. (I couldn't find an existing thread relevant to said questions.)

The post seemed relevant at the time. My mistake. :-[

Thank you again, pixelma. I am sorry for missing the "C", which is the key letter for the device. :)
