i have a fourth generation U2 ipod grayscale and im wondering if the Mpeg player will work? If not is there any alternative besides linux

Rockbox isn't Linux. Please read the manual and the PluginMpegplayer page. And please read the manual THOROUGHLY before posting again.

I mean when I try the installer about halfway through the process it says
"installer exe has encountered a problem and needs to close"

That doesn't sound like a Rockbox message.  What installer are you talking about?

Yes, it will work, but I have no idea how fast. Could you do a speed test and add the results to this table?

No, as far as I know rockbox and ipodlinux are the only alternative firmwares for ipods.
