iAudio X5 - crackle when starting playback

My iAudio X5 has recently developed a loud snap or crackle when starting playback. The noise is only for a fraction of a second at the begiining of playback, but it's very unpleasant if you were listening to something loud when you turned off last time. The same happens with the original firmware too, just much quieter.

Anyone any idea what's going on?
