Hmmm.  Curiouser and curiouser.

We may need someone with more expertise on this particular target.  I do not see how an accessory can get around the lack of USB code for the PortalPlayer targets in SVN.

And just to clarify, you get to the same screen whether you insert the plug with Rockbox running or boot the unit while the cable is connected?  Are you sure it's a Rockbox screen that you're seeing?

Yes (I have just confirmed both), and unmistakably yes.

The cradle I have is this one. The H10 I have is the US 20GB (MTP) model. The cradle uses a standard USB-to-mini-USB cable, while a direct connection to the iRiver uses a proprietary cable. At this point, I can't think of any other explanation for why my set-up works.

That's fine.  I would expect that the accessory houses a USB hub that your unit connects to.  I will wait for someone who has more experience with this target to shed some light on this, since at the moment I'm still mystified as to how Rockbox can be establishing a USB connection (cradle or no).

I've never seen a H10 up close, but I do know something about the usb stack and I can't see a way for this to happen either.

It is possible in some very special circumstances for the disks to appear on the OS, but they should then not be accessible, and as soon as the USB connect screen appears the player should reboot.

Lemmy Caution: can you confirm whether or not you can actually access the disk and copy files ?

Yep, been copying like it was my birthday. Using iTunes Agent to sync from iTunes, even. Drag and drop, etc. No problems.

Please don't tell my iRiver that it's not supposed to work. As the old joke goes, "we need the eggs."

Unfortunately, that's what I'm going to do. It's not supposed to work. The problem is that there are still some bugs left that could in some circumstances corrupt data, so it's not safe yet to enable it by default.

By now we found the bug that caused USB to be enabled on H10, so it's going to be fixed soon. If you really want to keep using native rockbox USB, you basically have two options : keep the current build, or compile yourself (or find someone else who can compile for you). We hope to be able to enable it soon, but unfortunately solutions for the remaining problems are hard to find.

If there's enough demand I might be persuaded to provide an unofficial build now and then.

I'll probably keep the current build, then. I do question your wisdom here, though - I struggle to imagine a situation in which Rockbox is so mission-critical that stability takes priority to functionality. It is currently doing everything I could possibly want for a player - other than stabilizing its existing functionality, I don't know what future updates could offer that would appeal in the absence of the function. But, that is for the developers to decide. I am grateful for this build, at least. It is working fine for me.

On second thought, I guess data corruption would be enough of a problem for enough people. So, nvm. ^^

Well it could corrupt transferred files, or worse your entire filesystem.  That is why it isn't enabled yet.  Surely the first thing you want from your player is that it will work?  It won't with a corrupted filesystem.

Well, it's just a music player. Reformatting the drive and transferring the media files back onto it is trivial. The real math I have to do is compare to how frequently I would have to do that versus the time/trouble it takes to boot into the original firmware, which is something I suppose I will figure out over time. But I do take back my last remark, in that I do see the wisdom in keeping possibly data-corrupting builds out of the standard releases. I'm willing to trade the risk of having to reformat my iRiver's drive, so I'll generally look for builds that do let me use the USB.

Actually, there's more than "just" the risk of corrupting data. On some setups it doesn't work at all (although the H10 seems to be pretty good in this regard, but we aren't sure), so some people would have to reboot to the OF manually

If you are set up for compiling builds it is trivial to enable Rockbox USB mode for your player if you would like.

I tried using iTunes Agent but it could not recognized my H10. Could you please let me know what setting you use for your H10 Device Information.

Thanks
