5th Gen Video - Won't Install - I/O Device Error?

I am currently using a 5th gen Video iPod and have used the rockbox firmware for some time. I recently uninstalled and completely erased my iPod to clean it up. Upon attempting to re-install rockbox manually, ipodpatcher comes up with an error reading: "Error writing to disk: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." Any thoughts on why this is happening? I'm using the latest apple firmware and the Robckbox utility doesn't work either.

Can you read and write files on the ipod itself?  Are you logged in as the administrator/root user?

Yes, have written the rockbox folder onto the ipod, it just won't install. I have also confirmed that I can add and play music through itunes. I only operate under one account, so yes to that as well.
