Just wanted to let the Rockbox people know
« on: February 23, 2008, 08:14:25 AM »
I'm not the type to lay down when I get crapped on. I will be expressing my view of Rockbox in many places and very frequently. Don't think that dis'ing me here in this place will protect from rightful consequence. I will have satisfaction. I didn't do anything wrong and I've been treated as though there are a bunch of immature idiots working here. That sh*t is gonna end. I do require a refund of the donation I made in support of something that has revealed itself to be utterly worthless because of the people behind it and will be letting PayPal know of the circumstances.

To get huffy at an innocent question and response and then to remove my posts on the subject is unacceptable and rude behavior and won't be tolerated.

For te record, the question or statement was : I'll donate money for a port to the e200v2 series. The reply was, That's not how Rockbox works, we don't do business that way...o something like that. I replied My meaning was just trying to impress upon whomever the need for a port and that to do business that way would be a payment. I didn't intend to make it seem like I wanted to pay for it, I was just expressing my desire to support the cause as per the PayPal donation button on the website.

1)  The New Ports forum is clearly for people working on the port, check out the sticky in the forum.  I suspect that was why your post and the answers were removed, although as I didn't remove them I am not sure.

2)  We are very grateful for any donations, but they are general donations, not for a specific purpose.

3)  If you want a port that badly, you had better start working on it.  Developers are not cheap, and to pay someone to do a rockbox port would cost many thousands.

4)  Your opinion is of course your own.  I am sorry you feel that way.  However, juvenile threats of "rightful consequences"  and that you will "have satisfaction" will be treated as such.

I removed your post as well as Bagder's response and your subsequent reply because they were off-topic for the New Ports forum.  The "Posting in This Forum" sticky for the New Ports forum says the following:

Quote
One thread per player. This is not for requesting ports to players. This is for discussion of working on them. If there is no post for your player of interest, you may start a thread. But discussion should then be of what is necessary to make the port happen, not "how great it would be" to have that port. As well, do not post simply to ask how a port is progressing. That will be considered disruptive, as it is unnecessary.

You were not "dis'ed" and my decision to remove your posts was not personal.  I removed a number of other similar posts from threads in that forum this morning, and I and the other moderators do so on a fairly regular basis in an attempt to keep those threads on point and to allow those threads to achieve their stated purpose, which is to promote the development of new ports and to foster discussion that is directly related to the work in progress on those ports.  The threads in the New Ports forum get long enough as it is; we want to keep them strictly limited to discussion directly related to the work that is being done so that others who come to the project and want to join in that work have ready access to the information without needing to read a series of off-topic posts.

You are right about one thing:  "This sh*t is gonna end."  You are welcome to share your view of Rockbox in these forums.  However, you are required to follow the rules of this forum when doing so, and if you do not, your posting privileges will be revoked.  This is your only warning.

Out of curiosity, which circumstances are these? No one promised you that a donation would result in anything, in fact, it's made abundantly clear many places that the opposite is true: donating does not guarantee you anything but a warm fuzzy feeling. It sounds a bit like donating to the Salvation army and then demanding a refund because they didn't install a home theater for you.

When you donate to Rockbox you surely donate for what we are, what has been done in the past and what is hopefully done in the future.

I don't see how any response in these forums or how any "treatment" of a single individual by another individual here would change any of those factors in any significant way.

The very same thoughts struck me. Absolutely priceless. However I'd suggest that the Rockbox dev. team capitulate immediately; this is clearly not a man to be trifled with.

What the OP doesn't realise is that ROCKbox is by no means a democracy like a lot of other projects. It's an oligarchy.

Nor does he appreciate the concept of open-source, or the motives of the people behind it.

I'd hazard that there aren't any successful open source projects that are true democracies.

And the ones that try without any true leaders stepping forward end up with a ridiculous amount of bike sheds in every color imaginable..

not nesaccarily a bad thing... there are projects out there with the expressed intention of doing just that!

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Sounds like someone wants the world handed to them on a platter.  I for one am truly thankful for the Rockbox team providing an awesome alternative to restrictive OEM firmware.

I've never understood the mentality of people who donate to something of their own free will, as it's not required, then demand a refund.

What will paypal do?  Absolutley nothing.  You chose to donate, and then had some other expectation that was never implied with the donation.
