Resume is not quite accurate
« on: February 21, 2008, 03:33:13 PM »
I've noticed this with the recent builds starting a couple weeks ago...  I have today's build, and it's the same issue.

I have the Cowon X5, and use it mostly to listen to podcasts.  If I used it to listen to music, this wouldn't be such an issue.  The problem is that when I turn the unit back on and it resumes the previous MP3, the time listed is correct, but the audio is off by roughly 5 minutes or so.  I have to fast forward about 5 minutes to 'catch up' to something I haven't heard already.

I've been using Rockbox for years on several different devices and love it.  Again, this wasn't an issue until recently.

Any ideas?  Some type of buffer issue maybe?  I've been through all the settings and nothing seems to affect this problem.

Thanks in advance!

The resume position is stored as a file offset, so the resume should be exact. I think the buffering code actually starts loading a bit before that, but it should still resume playback at the correct position. For the MP3 podcasts I listen to, I haven't noticed any big differences when resuming, though I usually resume via a bookmark (not that it should make any difference).

I'll try using a bookmark to see if it makes any difference.

I'd much rather not use bookmarks, but I guess it's better than fast forwarding five minutes each time I start using it...

Hopefully, it will get mysteriously fixed - just as it mysteriously broke!

If you were able to nail down when this problem started as in:
"January 30th's build does not show this behavior, but January 31st's and beyond all do." it would help identify an unnoticed unintended consequence of a recent commit.

I messed around with some bookmarks tonight, and the same thing is happening with the bookmarks.  To reiterate, say I create a bookmark at the 35:00 mark.    Shut down the unit.  Wait a couple seconds like a good boy, then turn it back on.  Resume the recent bookmark, and the time on the WPS shows 35:00, but the audio is something that I heard around the 30:00 mark - I haven't really pinpointed exactly how much time it's off by.  Also, I noticed that if I fast forward slightly - say to the 35:10 point, the audio _seems_ to be correct  IE: it's audio that's really at the 35:10 point, and not 30:10.

Soap, I'd love to be able to pinpoint it, but I kinda 'took some time off' from updating the Rockbox builds...  There's probably a gap from Sept - Oct til about the middle of January when I didn't do any updating.  Since January, I've been updating it about once a week, hoping that it's fixed again.

I did not try to resume smaller files - for example, a normal song.  I will try that tomorrow.

OK, I tried with a 4 minute song and an 8 minute song, and there is no sign of the problem.  I guess it's only with the larger files...

BTW, I'm using it only in the car, and I use the Car Adapter Mode - if that makes any difference.

Resume problems should be fixed now (as of around r16393). :) We have Mangus Holmgren to thank.
