Baffled -- Need Serious Help
« on: February 20, 2008, 07:31:23 PM »
I have a 60gb ipod (gen 5.5).  I installed the latest version of Rockbox this afternoon and had everything up and running.  However, I somehow screwed up the default theme I want to use (iCatcher) by messing around with colors and other options.  Now I cannot restore the original theme.  My ipod boots up with the modified version no matter what I do.  I have read the manual, done countless reboots and resets, deleted the config.cfg file out of my rockbox directory, and even uninstalled and reinstalled everything (bootloader and latest rockbox version).  After all of this, I still have the same modified theme on my ipod and cannot select the original default.  What am I doing wrong?  Please help!!!

Try clearing your settings (there's a button you hold on start-up to do this, not sure what it is for your player, search the manual), and reselecting iCatcher from the Browse Themes menu.  If that doesn't work then I'm baffled, too...  Did you modify the .wps file or just mess around with the settings while Rockbox was running?

I did try the reset several times and while that reset all the other defaults, by screen theme didn't change.  I might have inadvertantly messed with a .wps file, but I unistalled everything and then reinstalled -- and I still have the same problem.

I don't know what to do.

Reinstall the affected theme.  It's not clear to me that you did this.  If you save theme settings then the .cfg file for the theme you're using will be modified.  You will need to restore an unmodified theme to your player to get things back to "normal".  Clearing your settings does nothing to the .cfg files in your themes folder.

Reinstall the affected theme.

When you re-install Rockbox doesn't it overwrite the included themes?

I did try overwriting the included themes.  I deleted all the themes and the directory they were in.  I then reistalled them, but nothing changed.  That's when I did a complete unistall and reinstall.  But, again, it's still the same.  I can't fathom how that's even possible -- I deleted all the files (other than those that shipped with the iPod) before reinstalling.

Eh? It shouldn't overwrite the e.g. iCatcher.cfg unless you tell it to and I think if you chose "save theme settings" you are prompted with a default "configNN" path in the virtual keyboard... (not the last theme you loaded, or am I misunderstanding?).

cgm55082: Did you try a different theme and if you want to use the iCatcher version that comes with Rockbox, reinstalling the firmware should have fixed it (as MarcGuay said) or are you using a different one? And I'm still not entirely sure what you're seeing or not seeing. Are background/foreground colour the same, or something else? Does this happen even right after the reset settings or when you chose the theme you want to use again?

I don't know what happened, but I went into the plugins section and when I came back to the main menu, the rockbox theme I wanted was on the player.  I had originally modified it accidentally so that the background was all white.  I was trying to get it back to the background with a gradient and the rockbox logo in the lower right.  I have no idea what happened or why.

Now I'm a little afraid to touch anything.  Any tips on how I can simply change the color of the text?

Also, can I delete the calendar and notes directories on my root directory (I think they came with the iPod)?  What I want is for my music directories to be the only ones that display on the player.

Thanks to you both for your help.

Go to Settings -> Theme Settings -> Browse Themes and select "cabbiev2".  What happens?

Okay, I followed your directions and the screen stays the same with the exception of the text showing up in white -- which is what I want -- but it's smaller than I'd like.  Any thoughts on how to change the size without losing the white color?

Also, can I delete the directories that show up under files so all that appears are my music directories?

Did the background go back to the gradient with the Rockbox logo?  I'm really confused about what you want.  Was it actually iCatcher that you wanted as your default theme or Cabbiev2 as it seems you described more recently?

You might want to start a new thread for this with a descriptive title, I can't answer it.  (Actually, I'm sure searching would turn up other people asking the same question).   You may also want to change the subject of this thread to be more descriptive of your problem.

The gradient background came back on its own, right after I went into plug-ins and came back to the main menu.  At that time, the screen switched back to the defaults on its own.  None of them were working before -- I was stuck with the ugly background color I had messed around with earlier this afternoon.  I don't know what caused the defaults to suddenly start working, but they are now.  It's very strange.

Rockbox is doing some other funny things on my player, so I think it's just a matter of continuing to read the manual and trying to figure it out.  Regardless, I appreciate your help.
