What are "maps" for?

When I go to the Download
page
for my Sansa e280 I see that I can download "maps" for each current build.
I cannot find mention of that anywhere. So I downloaded them and put them on my Sansa. No change.
What are they for? What do they map? If anything....
Anybody? Bueller? :-)

They "map" symbols to addresses and vice versa so that if you get a crash or similar and an address reported, the corresponding map file can be used to see in exactly which function the problem occurred.

Oh, okay. Thanks for the info.
Nothing I can use with my limited (read: no) understanding of programming.
