Charging via Motorola RAZR charger
« on: September 27, 2005, 12:59:12 PM »
The RAZR charger has a USB plug at the end - I'm wondering if it could be used as an alternate (or even side by side???) charger for the iRiver series.

RAZR lead -  Outputs 5V at 550mA

iRiver AC lead - Outputs 5V at 2A

So the battery shouldn't fry, it should just be a slower charge due to the lower ampage

?

assuming the connector is the same, are both of the same polarity?

The RAZR doesn't specify it's polarity

then test it with a multimeter. if its wrong, it WILL fry the iriver without a shadow of a doubt.

The iRiver's can't be charged off the USB, can they? The hardware isn't there. I've never seen my 120 charge up when plugged it into my computer (but I can sure drain it fast!!) but my RAZR sure does.

I would assume there's only one polarity on a USB plug. It's not like we have AC USB vs. DC USB and such. USB is USB. Maybe that's a stupid assumption but considering the number of devices that can charge off USB these days that all work off the exact same cables you'd have to assume there's only one polarity.

ah, i thought it was a split lead or something...

It didnt occur to me that somone wouldnt realise that a mini-usb cable doesnt contain any circuitry, and the design is standard, so it would make no difference compared to the iriver cable.

EDIT: BTW, the hardware IS there, you can solder 2 extra wires internally to connect it. iRiver cheaped out on not putting in a circuit to prevent both connections being used at once...

Yeah. You can make it work but I'm sure as hell not going to solder components on my working 120 just so I can brick it with solder splash! :o iRiver doesn't give us a USB charging capability by default.

nobby: I agree, but they could have remove the power jack at all and have the ac adaptor end with a usb connector. -> like apple does I think. (firewireish, of course)
