2nd Gen Ipod Mini Help

1).  I can't tell if my ipod is charging!  Normally I can see a symbol  that indicates the battery is charging, but now I can't see anything....can someone please tell me how to check it.

2).  Next to my battery status bar, I have a "-25" and then a black square, what do these mean?

Please HELP!

The -25 is the volume.
The black square is the symbol for "stop" as in playback is stopped.
