Battery benchmark questions - ipod 5.5g
« on: February 17, 2008, 01:36:55 AM »
So my friend was wondering what sort of battery life i could get out of my rockbox'd 5.5g ipod video...

So i fully charged the unit, restarted it, and started the battery bench... left it playing, and came back about a day later.

I found the battery bench file, and after reading it im confused... So i graphed it with excel, and i still dont understand.

My power of my battery seemed to go UP in the first part of the test... is that normal?

why dont i have any readings after 20%?

is my battery setting put to the right one? what mhz should it be set to?

Can i change it somehow so the battery % more closely reflects the actual battery percentage?

Version r-15975M-080131 (Custom Battery build from a few weeks ago, there was a thread here but i think it got deleted, my bookmarks dont seem to work for it anymore)

WPS: custom built made to look like windows media player, lots of dark colors, but nearly all the screen has text on it... So that probabally reduced the battery life some...

Im not sure what other pertinant info should be posted with battery benchmarks, i whought there was a thread about it here, but i didnt see it when i did a quick search before posting.

Not a particularly scientific observation but I've always noticed the battery indicator on both of my players, that have used rockbox, go up after a while after being switched on.  I think it's fairly normal.

Pileot, you can post the battery bench to the "iPodRuntime" Wiki page.
To your questions:
1. The battery percent and voltage will shortly drop during high power consumption. This happens during startup as there is lots of disk activity. When putting the player into playback mode, the power consumption is reduced a lot and the battery voltage "relaxes". That's why you see the battery percent going up in the first minutes.
2. The battery percents are calculated from the voltage via a look up table. This look up table does not fully fit to the 60/80GB battery. This has no influence on the real runtime. Tha's why your battery bench end at 20%.

Is there a way to edit this so my battery % will more accurately represent my remaining battery life?

If you can compile rockbox by yourself, you can use this patch http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/8596.

unfortunately im not awesome enough to figure it out...

I do know there was a battery build somewhere on the forums, but i cant find it now and my bookmarks and my bookmarks are dead, so im thinking it was moved or removed...

Additionally, I read a thread about turning off the LCD entirely while the backlight is off, but the last post on that thread was over a year ago, does anyone know what the progress on that is?

On the topic of battery life and increasing playtime, is there a centeralized location (like on the wiki or whatever) where theres a list of features you can turn down or off so your battery will last longer? I did a forum search but it seems like every time somone has a question they ask, and you all must get really tired of answering the same questions over and over...
