Rockbox H140 won't start...
Febs:
Have you read the installation chapter of the Rockbox Manual? It explains in detail how to do this.

I read the installation section. I see talk of flash/flashing but nothing about how to go about doing this. Unless I'm looking in the wrong area??

Here are the instructions from the iriver manual for the H100 series regarding how to flash a firmware update:
--- Quote ---How to UPGRADE?
1. Download the latest firmware upgrade file from
www.iriveramerica.com.
2. Extract the file and save it to the ROOT folder of the H140.
3. Connect the AC adapter to the H140.
(Caution: Only upgrade the firmware on the H140 with the AC adapter connected.)
4. Press in and hold the NAVI button to open the H140 menu.
5. Press the NAVI button once to select the General menu.
6. Select the Firmware Upgrade and press the NAVI/MENU button to activate
the firmware upgrade.
7. Click the NAVI/MENU button after selecting YES
on the Alert window.
8. Check whether your LCD window shows “Firmware
Upgrading...â€
9. Do not turn the player off or disconnect the player from the
AC Adapter until the Firmware Upgrading is done. When the
power goes off automatically, the upgrade is done. After turning
the player on, confirm the Firmware Upgraded operating.
--- End quote ---
You can download the iriver manual here:
http://www.iriver.com/support/down_ok.asp?idx=2420
To install the Rockbox bootloader, you have to patch the iriver firmware file that you download in step 1 above. The Rockbox Manual explains how to do that. After patching the file, put the patched file on the root of your player and proceed from step 3 above.
LambdaCalculus:
The firmware patcher is here. Download this, and follow the instructions Febs gave above.
Afterwards, Rockbox should be all set to go.

Nowadays we have Rockbox Utility for doing the patching work. The old method will still work, but I assume there won't be any updates to fwpatcher anymore (though there hasn't been an update to the bootloaders for quite a while too).
