Trouble with directories using a sd card in sansa e280
« on: February 11, 2008, 03:42:04 AM »
Hi,

I bought a new sandisk microsd card (4 GB, sdhc) for my sansa e280. After insertion I had a directory under root //. I tried to rename this directory to MicroSD using the context menu within rockbox (please, don’t ask, why), so now I have a directory and MicroSD, too.

Under reside all files I stored on the card. But under MicroSD are all files and directories again that reside under root (.rockbox, MUSIC, PHOTO and so on)! And there is another directory named MicroSD (but not another directory). I can walk along down all MicroSD directories (and up again) until a depth of 29, then I am again at root.

rockbox properties (context menu) applied on the MicroSD directory says “Failed to gather information” (the same message, if the card is not inserted).

If I rename the first MicroSD directory to any other name with the context menu, all subdirectories with this name will have the same, new name.

stats.rock tells me that there are 7743 file and 679 dirs, but the Win explorer says correctly 1504 files in 106 dirs. In the Win explorer I can’t access the MicroSD directory (“access denied”).

disktidy.rock shows “plugin returned error”, random_folder_advance produces a list with up to 4 subdirectoires //MicroSD/MicroSD/MicroSD/MicroSD/files

Can anybody help me out ?

I would run a chkdsk as there's a discrepancy between what stats.rock says and what Explorer says.  It sounds like something got botched and you ended up with recursively generated nested folders named MicroSD.  It sounds like a bug, since I can't think of why that should happen.

Do not rename any special folder with "<>" chars in its name (they are, after all, not valid in normal FAT names), as that will really confuse Rockbox. The bug is that you can rename that folder, not what happened as a result of it... :)

Hmm. .. I'm not really clear on what the original name of the directory was.  But it seems like we have an explanation of what you're seeing.

Lear, why do Rockbox and Explorer disagree regarding the number of directories.  Aren't they consulting the same file allocation table?

The original name is " < microSD1 > " (without the spaces) for the Sansa e200 (and probably c200).

I think they are consulting the same tables, but in this case, Windows is (correctly) more picky and refuse to enter a bad directory.

Thank you very much for your answers.

After chkdsk the directory MicroSD has gone, is still there, of course.

I swear, I will never try it again. I think, in the future you will restrict renaming such special files.
