What does it mean by root?
« on: February 10, 2008, 08:09:24 AM »
Hi everyone, sorry, I'm really noob at this stuff, but I've recently found out about the Rockbox feature for Gigabeat and seen what it can do, so I really wish i could get it. I read the instructions from the site:
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GigabeatFXPort#Installation_Instructions
but there are some things that are quite confusing.
can anyone explain to me, what it means when it says
"ALTERNATE: Copy rockbox.zip to X:\ and unzip it to the root"
What's the root? I tried it once before, but i got a error message saying "system cannot find hdd" or something along those lines, but i've fixed that problem. I still want the rockbox though, so could anyone help me? It'd be absolutely super, if someone could make a video showing step by step instructions =D
Cheers,
Andrew

The root just means that when you go to my computer and you double click on the gigabeat's drive, your in the root. If you go into any folders your no longer in the root. Say your gigabeat is letter D:/ on your computer, you would just unzip to rockbox.zip to letter D. Hope that helps.

oh yeah, that helps a lot! Thank you!
oh, also. The step where it says
    *  unzip rockbox.zip to X:
    * ALTERNATE: Copy rockbox.zip to X:\ and unzip it to the root
this step confuses me. So i unzip rockbox.zip to the gigabeat drive (?). Then am i supposed to copy that zipped rockbox.zip to it again, then unzip it?  <--- argh ! >< So confusing. What does it mean by ALTERNATING it? sorry, if i'm really noob ><

ALTERNATE in this context means another way to do the same.
So you only have to do one of them.

But if you really have this problems with the instructions.
I would recommend Rbutil. (see wiki) .

It does all the installing things for you with a few button clicks.

Oh, and the official installation instructions are in the official manual. The instructions in the wiki are rather outdated, and in case there are updated informations in the wiki they are linked from the manual. IIRC the manual even explains what the root folder is ...

oh, can someone also explain to me what a period is? in terms of the step:

"There must be a directory in the root named .rockbox: X:\.rockbox (note the period)"  ?

A period is a punctuation mark, the very character that finishes this sentence.

In this case it means that the directory should be called ".rockbox" and not "rockbox".

ohh okay! haha thanks! HEY! I SUCCESSFULLY got the rockbox onto my gigabeat! THANKS GUYS! but a few more questions, before i run off happily ever after.

1) The songs for some reason won't play, and also, whenever i do open up a song, and select "open with" i dont know what to use it with. I've tried everything, but none of them work. I've also noticed that each song has the .SAT at the end of the name. Am i meant to get rid of the encryption?

2) If i wanted to upload new themes, do i just unzip the theme i downloaded from the net, into themes in the rockbox folder, when my gigabeat is connected to the computer?

3) How do I upload videos onto the gigabeat and in which format?

thanks guys! Hope I'm not too much of a troublemaker for you all...

A full stop in British English!

Actually, we mean the Rockbox wiki that's linked under "Documentation" on the left side of the screen.
