Nokia N800 Internet Tablet (linux)

Are there any efforts going on to port rockbox to linux?  Seems like the most basic platform, but the closest thing I could find to folks running it on linux was this:

Is there a linux port somewhere out in the wild?  If so, getting rockbox on the Nokia N800 may be as trivial as compiling.  Does that sound right?

You may want to take a peek at this:

If the Nokia has SDL, you can just compile one of the simulators for it and run that. How usable it is depends on how well the Nokia handles the keyboard for controls.

I do believe that SDL does exist for the Maemo platform (which is what the Nokia tablets are all based on); it's not Rockbox related but Quake was ported to Maemo using SDL libraries:

http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2007/sdlquake

So that means that Rockbox as an app on the Nokia tablets is possible.

I would agree that porting rockbox to the physical platform would be a waste of time.  Not only will users not be willing to reboot it into rockbox, but they already have a plethora of dedicated full screen media players which use either the touch screen or buttons.  Running the emulator would be a good idea, but it would probably require reworking the GUI to look normal without holding the device sideway.
Another major issue the is the horrible sound quality coming from the device, I tried to use it as an MP3 player, and the sound it produces was equivalent to a $2 pair of headphones.

Good points... it didn't even occur to me that Rockbox would replace rather than work with another OS.  The emulator sounds like the best approach.

Really?  The N800 has horrible sound quality?  I have not bought it yet, so I have no idea.

Please remember its just a feature simator NOT an emulator. Emulator has a very specific meaning and calling the sim that is misleading and can confuse users
