albums don't play in order

When I play an album, the tracks are listed in order but the songs play in a different order.  I haven't figured out how rockbox is ordering the songs.  Where do I set rockbox to play the songs in order of track number? ???

Sounds to me like you have shuffle on.

It could also be that you are browsing by file names, and your file names don't contain the track number. You could either rename your files, or try the database mode instead.

LinusN, if tracks are listed by file name (regardless of whether or not there's a number at the beginning of the name) then won't they be inserted into a playlist in that same order?  It's difficult for me to see how the ordering gets changed between selection of the album and generation of the playlist without shuffle being turned on.  Perhaps I'm misunderstanding something.
