Is there a possible interaction with the "reduce ticking" setting for the iRiver remote? - I seem to remember it slows down the signalling.

Thanks Petur. The Reduce Ticking setting makes no difference. I've gone back to Mmmm's build and all works well. Thanks for recommending that Bug100.

Looking good so far on both h1xx and h3xx.  Seems a little more responsive actually, likely placebo effect! ;)
