Hello Rockbox, long time listener, first time caller.
I have an Archos Jukebox V2 that I am still in love with after all these years. It was running Rockbox 2.4 until quite recently when I decided to see what's new.
I loaded a current build (r16158-080124), and I liked the new features so much that I decided to flash it as the default firmware.
Now I find a really interesting behavior: If I power up the player on battery power, there is no problem. However, if the player is off and I insert the A/C adapter, which powers the device on, I get an immediate ATA -11 error.
If I power up the player and then insert the A/C adapter, there is no problem. The error only occurs when inserting the A/C adapter from a powered-off state.
Another test I tried, if I have the player off and I insert the USB cable, the player turns on, and the USB logo is displayed. The computer sees a USB device connected, but no drive letter ever appears. I also do not hear or see the HD spin up (no red activity light). If the player is already powered up when the USB cable is inserted, everything works perfectly.
If I hold down F1 while inserting the A/C cable, I get the Archos charging screen. If I press ON at this point, Rockbox tries to start, and gives me the ATA -11 error. If instead I hold F1 and press ON, I get the Archos firmware which starts and runs fine.
Likewise, if I hold F1 while inserting the USB cable, the Archos firmware starts and the drive letter appears on the computer.
I have never noticed this problem before, so I really wonder if this is a problem of the current builds? I know I posted this on the Hardware forum, but the more I think about this problem, it doesn't seem like hardware, but perhaps it is more like software.
