Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 - USB as a power source
« on: January 24, 2008, 05:01:30 AM »
Hi,
My Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 connected to computer's USB port as the removable disk can work up to 30 minutes and it is all the time powered by the batteries. Since the USB has +5V (and up to 1A) maybe it is possible to do some modifications to the Archos hardware and get the power from USB? Not for charging the batteries, just for powering the HDD while connected.
Anybody tried?

Best regards,
teel

You could connect +5V from USB to the positive charger input.  However, that doesn't have to work.  It might draw too much current, or the voltage supplied by USB might not be enough.   USB is only supposed to supply up to 0.5A and it will drop below 5V if loaded heavily.  The specification demands overcurrent protection which resets automatically (ie. you won't blow a fuse on the host end) so I guess you could try this and see what happens.

if it's a V1 recorder i think you'll find it needs 9v to charge.
don't know about V2 though.

you can buy usb chargers for the V1 which has a stepped up voltage - i got mine from ebay. you may be able to get them for the V2 as well. it does mean you need to use 2 usb slots though - 1 for the power & 1 for the data.

Hi,
I modified my Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 with a Transcend 4GB CF card and I found out later that I don't need batteries for USB Connection. On my PC the Transcend Card appears as a cf disk. I tried it on a USB car radio in a shop and it also worked (I don't habe a USB car radio :-\)

Unfortunately an other Jukebox Recorder also with USB 2.0 doesn't work this way. If anyone knows if there are differences between Archos Jukeboxes (manufacturing year!?!?!) please let me know  :-\
