playback problems on Sansa e280
« on: January 22, 2008, 11:26:44 PM »
Just installed build r16136-080122 on my Sansa e280.  Pretty straightforward, I like the interface and features.  However, I'm having issues with playback of two types of files.

M4A - encoded using dBpoweramp, Nero AAC codec Aug 6 2007, VBR with the quality set to .15 - Rockbox will pause for a significant fraction of a second every 1+ seconds during playback.  It does this consistently with every file I've tried for the entire duration of each track.  While I can't test these files in the OF, they do play fine on my PC and on my Sony Ericsson W300i.

WMA - also encoded using dBpoweramp, WMA 9.2 codec, VBR quality 10.  Rockbox plays what sounds like microsecond snatches of sound from throughout the track as though it were being fast forwarded at a high rate of speed.  It does this consistently with every file I've tried.  After approximately 5 - 20 seconds of this behavior, it advances to the next track in the playlist.  The length of time varies depending on the track, most likely related to the length of each file.  The same tracks that exhibit this behavior in Rockbox play fine when I boot to OF 01.02.18A.

Are there any known fixes for these issues?

Such a low setting defaults to SBR in Nero, and your Sansa isn't fast enough to decode SBR.  You'll have to either reencode the files with a more reasonable AAC profile (LC), upgrade to a player with a faster CPU, or figure out how to disable SBR decoding (which will make the files sound quite awful but able to play in real time as in the OF).

A couple people have reported this with the latest WMA decoder.  I just haven't had time to dig into it and see what MS changed.
