iPod won't boot up
« on: January 22, 2008, 05:02:53 PM »
I believe I plugged the iPod in the charger when the apple logo was displayed on rockbox's boot up. When I realized the apple logo was displayed instead of the "do not disconnect" screen that should be, I unplugged the iPod and held menu+center button to reset it. It shut off altogether instead of rebooting. It hasn't turned on since then. Neither my PC nor iTunes detect my iPod, so it does not appear as the G: drive as it normally would.

Here's a list of things that are NOT the problem:

- The USB cable I'm using. I've been able to plug a friend's iPod into my computer using the same plug.
- The USB port I'm using. When I plugged my friend's iPod in, it was in the same port I used for my own iPod.
- My computer. It was able to detect my friend's iPod.
- My iTunes software. It was also able to detect my friend's iPod.

Here's a list of things that are NOT solutions:
- Holding the menu+center button. Tried that.
- Holding any combination of buttons. Tried all of the combinations on the apple website, and on other ipod help sites.
- Turning the hold switch off. That's not the problem.
- Uninstalling rockbox. I can't access the iPod to do that.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Do you hear a "click" sort of noise when you try to turn it on or the screen flashing for a fraction of a second? This is actually a very common "bug", let's say, that affects the ipods for some reason.

This has happened to my ipod nano a lot of times and it usually starts working after either charging it via wall charger or just leaving it alone for about 3-4 days and then plugging it into the computer.

There is no obvious click or flash, and even when I closely pay attention I don't see anything. So i don't think that is the problem. Thanks for your time though.

When I posted this as a bug (i'm new to this site), it was closed and the admin (or mod, I'm not sure) who closed it recommended I leave it in the charger overnight, then attempt to reboot it. I was also recommended that on another website, and i believe that's along the lines of what you recommended, so I'll try it. Thanks.

Read through some of the threads at http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?board=31.0

A lot of people have had this problem and you can see what worked for them there.

Actually, after reading some of those topics in that forums (particularly "you killed my ipod  :("), I tried putting the iPod right next to my ear while holding menu+center button to reset. I was able to hear a very faint clicking, though no sign of the screen flashing. So I leave the iPod alone for a few days before putting in the charger, or do I just leave it in the charger over night?

As for my computer and iTunes not recognizing my iPod...is there an explanation for that, or is it just because the battery is flat?

Your computer doesn't recognize it because your battery is dead (or sometimes other things, too...). The funny thing about this whole situation is that it doesn't always have to occur when your battery is dead.

The first time this happened to me, I just finished charging my ipod and was disconnecting it from my computer. I apparently managed to pull it out at the wrong time or something because after that the ipod wouldn't turn on and all i t would do is flicker the screen or make a slight clicking noise. After time, the loudness of the click and duration of screen flickers went down and eventually nothing happened even trying to turn it on.

I was panicked this whole time because I thought that my nano was a goner, so before going to the Apple Store to get it checked up, I plugged it into my computer again and it started charging again!

You can go ahead and try plugging it into the charger, but if that doesn't work, leave it alone for a few days and then plug it into the computer/wall charger. I've heard that the wall charger has a higher rate of success in all of this...
