iPod Video, sometimes only turns on on "reset"

The update feature of iTunes CAN update the flash in the ipod.
I seem to recall reading that it was not possible to update an ipod mini
1g to a larger disk drive (CF card) unless a newer version of the firmware
was installed, probably because the boot loader in flash was also updated.

Ok...  so far,

..is there something to think about when using the iTunes Update function on a boxed iPod ?  (...of course using it when the original apple stuff on the iPod is booted)

Are there problem's with the rockbox bootlader (on the hd) when using this iTunes feature ?

(sorry for this noob questions...  maybe there is a thread 'bout that, but i havent found it yet)
