60G iPod. Sooo close to working perfectly but......
« on: January 17, 2008, 01:38:57 PM »
First, I'm incredibly impressed with how far Rockbox has come for the iPod since I last tried.  (well before the installer was available)
The sound quality gain over the Apple firmware is astonishing!

I just have one annoying bug I can't seem to work out.
Everything works fine until at some point it will lockup while listening.
Note that I'm *fairly sure* it only locks while listening while updating the database. - I'm trying to determine if this is a variable.

Anyway, when it locks, a re-boot will get it working again.
However, my settings are no longer remembered.
It goes back to the default theme and default settings.
If I change the settings back, the next time I re-boot (or the player shuts down and I start up again) the settings are lost again. ad infinitum....

For clarity:  Once it has locked once, it reverts to default *everytime* I re-boot.  I can re-install Rockbox and it will keep settings again *until* the next time it locks up.

So my question then is a multi pronged one:
1) Any ideas what's going on here?
2) Is there a way I can preserve my runtime data when/if I have to re-install.
3) is this problem perhaps caused by enabling the gathering of runtime data.  I seem to remember in the past this was considered "experimental"

Thanks.   :D

1) The issue that Rockbox forgets the settings is often caused by filesystem corruption on the player. You should run chkdsk on your player to see if this fixes your problem.

2) To save your runtime data you can choose the entry "Export Modifications" in the database settings. This creates the file database_changelog.txt in the .rockbox directory, that can be imported later.
See also chapter 4.2.3. of the manual.

3) I use the gather runtime data feature (but not on an Ipod) and haven't expreienced similar issues, so i don't think this is directly related.

HA!
Thanks PaulJam!!

Now that you mention it, Windows did recently want to run a diskcheck on this drive/iPod.
I just dismissed it as I'd been having other issues related to adding new hard drives to my machine.
This would also answer another issue I couldn't figure out how to explain in order to ask for help.!!!  :o

Thanks a million.
I'll re-format her, re-install, and re-load and report back.
 ;D

Yeah, the poor disc was *mashed*
This might explain why it was mounting twice with the same drive letter  Huh

So far so good.....
Thanks again.

Checking file system on F:
The type of the file system is FAT32.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You
may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended
that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.
Volume Serial Number is B2BC-88A0
\.rockbox\config.cfg is cross-linked on allocation unit 6514.
Cross link resolved by copying.
Convert lost chains to files (Y/N)? Yes
1424 KB in 3 recovered files.
Windows has made corrections to the file system.
     58464080 KB total disk space.
64 KB in 4 hidden files.
        31184 KB in 1949 folders.
     58183632 KB in 8328 files.
       249136 KB are available.

16384 bytes in each allocation unit.
3654005 total allocation units on disk.
15571 allocation units available on disk.

Working perfectly now.
I mean perfectly!

The interface is fast
No lock-ups
And the sound!!!

Please stop double and triple posting, it is against the forum guidelines.  Use the modify button if nobody has posted since you.

I'm glad you have had success though :)

Mthrsuperior: While we are glad that you solved your problem and you shared your solution with us, it is considered bad etiquette to post immediately after your previous post in a short interval, without any serious reason.

Please don't consider Rockbox "anti-user friendly" just because you were informed about a specific guideline in this forum. BigBambi wasn't offensive, he just tried to remind you that it is better to edit your post than posting again. (unless after a  considerable amount of time)

I understand.
I was being a bit factious  ;D

I've never known updating via reply to be considered the same as double posting.
If someone was subscribed to a thread and it was edited, not updated, with essential info (although I appreciate this isn't really the case here) how would one know it's been updated?????
But that's fine.  I did say "Your house Your rules"

That quip about unfriendly wasn't conjecture.
I hear that comment a lot when I'm raving about Rockbox, either in reference to the product or the forum moderation.  This is just an example of that.

No hard feelings.
I'm really happy with how Rockbox is working lately.

I tidied it up.
Feel free to delete all the OT verbosity.

Modifying still produces the new tag on the forum, although I'm not sure about the notification.

I'm sorry about that, but there are specific reasons we moderate like we do, that have been covered before in various threads.  If you are interested please search.
