I think you'll experience much better sound quality by going that route anyway.

The whole thing will work if you can get your own directory structure under the 55 or 57 (I forget which) cahracter limit for the full pathname of the files. Then you can use both the almighty Rockbox and the OF side by side without iTunes.

Yeah, just make sure that you don't listen to any music with long artist, album or track names.   :-\

I assume you have the iTrip Dock, which according to http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodAccessories is one of the few dock-connected FM modulators which does not work.
I bet you could sell it on Craigslist / eBay and buy one which does work for little additional money.  Support for the Apple Accessory Protocol will likely not come anytime soon.
