Strange ticking sound
« on: January 16, 2008, 11:51:42 AM »
Hello everybody!

Recently I got my 5.5 G 80GB iPod (iMod to be prescise, but I don't think it really matters when installing Rockbox). I decided to install Rockbox onto it. There are no problems during the whole installation process. However, after booting Rockbox and putting my headphones on,  I hear a strange ticking sound (similar to the sound right before "I've been mad for ****ing years, absolutely years..." in "Speak to Me" by Pink Floyd) without any music being played. When the volume is set at the normal listening level it's barely audible, but it's still there. Any ideas what that might be?

Everything is fine when using iTunes.
Tried both the automatic and manual installation.
Any help would be appreciated.
Sorry for my English in case I made any mistakes.

Thank you in advance.

You have a physically modified iPod. It'd be quite hard to determine if this isn't partially the cause.

Why would that happen only while using Rockbox then?

My iPod (original 5G so not totally relevant but hey ho) was very quiet with the Apple firmware, but presumably due to the way Rockbox works I can now here the hard drive ticking away at certain times (startup, between tracks, etc)

I'm still using the iTunes-transferred music with the Database feature, but will be moving to a proper directory structure soon I think, maybe with less jumping about over the HDD inside the iPod, it may be quieter..?

I asked Vinnie Rossi about the possible influence of the mod on the Rockbox software. It turns out that there is none:

"The iMod has no effect on Rockbox.  Rockbox software would not know that the unit has been modded.  The modification takes the analog output directly from the Wolfson dac chip and bypasses the stock output stage, but this is not something that Rockbox is concerned with."

Any other ideas?

The iMod shouldn't influence Rockbox.  However, it might be less immune to electrical noise, and Rockbox might create more electrical noise than the stock firmware.  I know that on the Sansa e200 series people reported more noise with Rockbox than the stock firmware.

Yes, whether Rockbox "knows" about it has nothing at all to do with whether or not it could cause averse effects while Rockbox is in use. So while it's "not something Rockbox is concerned with", it creates a different environment under which audio is played back.

So basically there aren't any chances of fixing it, are there?

Kuba, your English is actually very good. As far as I can tell, there are no mistakes. :)
This is coming from a guy who checks his siblings' essays, youth letters, and the like. ;)

Not unless someone sends a interested (and that's the key word) developer an iMod to have a look at.

hi,well i used to experience that sound in the past with the sansa e250,but with an ipod its kinda weird,hmmm...the mod u done to the ipod, has nothing to do with rockbox,in an ipod the only sound i hear its like a "dit...dit" sound and that happens when i play videos, but its kinda noticeable at 6dB while playing a video in mpeg player,so i think its weird and regarding to your english,it is ok,bye, take care
