computer wont reconize ipod (rockbox already works)< not anymore

ok, first iv already done this to a nano with no problems at all, so im not a complete noob.... yes im a noob, but not a complete noob.

SHORT: im trying to open up the ipod from my computer, and drag and drop files. but it doesnt show up.

LONG: i have rockbox installed and it works (cant play mpeg right now, but i can figure that out later) but when i connect to my computer (win xp) it doesnt recognize that anything is there (if i leave it in long enough, itunes will say it found a corrupted ipod, but it doesnt show up in My Computer. yes, im in disk mode.

edit: ok, i decided to try and restart everything. i restored my ipod, and now it has the "plug into charger" symbol, but the computer still doesnt recognize it. i have tried using different usb ports too..... hmmm

Put the iPod into disk mode, and then connect the USB cable.  There are instructions for putting it in disk mode in the installation section of the Rockbox Manual

i WAS in disk mode, before i restored my ipod. now when i try to (many times...) go to disk mode, it just shows a picture of the charger going into the electrical outlet...

If you're getting this symbol in disk mode, I'd say that means your battery is flat.  Leave it charging for a while then try again.  You're sure you're putting it into disk mode correctly? (flick "hold" switch off, hold SELECT+MENU until iPod reboots, straight away hold SELECT+PLAY)

^No it doesn't.

If you get a picture of a wall charger, you must actually plug into a WALL CHARGER. Your computer won't work. iTunes should have told you to "Connect iPod to an external power supply." You simply need to finish installing the firmware, which on older models, is done via external power supplies.

If you don't have a wall charger, try going to a store with displayed speaker docks (like Best Buy) and placing the iPod on one with power.

Based on what AquaStreak said, you won't be able to reach disk mode until you attach it to a wall charger and let it complete the update.

no, but im trying to charge it for a while first.. it keeps changing from the apple logo to the sad face... and then back again.... and btw, my hard drive is clicking, like its stopping really fast or something...

edit: ok,  i got it into disk mode (while connected to wall charger) and it says ok to disconnect. i want to restore it, to fix whatever happened, so i plug it into the computer. it changes to do not disconnect, and my computer starts humming, so i know it knows its there, but it never shows up in itunes. also, it changes back to ok to disconnect a few seconds after i plug it in. so i unplug it, but it stays at that screen. if i plug it back in it starts up again with do not disconnect, and my computer humming...
any suggestions?

edit again: ok, now i can get it into disk mode when its not connected to the wall charger, but it still says ok to disconnect... wtf?

I would charge it overnight.  Then try going into Disk Mode and see if your computer will recognize it -- does it show up as a removable drive?  Is it listed as a USB device?

open itunes
connect the ipod
select it in itunes
check the box that says enable disc mode (or something like that)
click apply
then when you plug your ipod in with itunes off
go to my computer you should see it now. like drive f or something

You might try putting the iPod into diagnostic mode and see if you can run a HDD check on it.

and how long should the HDD scan take? its just been saying "HDD scan" for a while now...
