Problem with X5L ... Need some help, please?
« on: January 15, 2008, 06:05:40 PM »
Hi everyone, my first post on this forum...

Basically, I'm having a very frustrating problem with my X5L, which has been happily rockboxed since the day I got it, about 6 months ago ... until now.

A while ago, I noticed some hissing in my headphones that I'd never noticed before, so after testing the 'phones on other sources, decided it was the player at fault. my first port of call was to delete rockbox, and install the cowon firmware (which is horrible) just to see if it made any difference.
When the player booted up with the cowon firmware, it went straight into the voice recordings folder, and wouldn't go out of it, no matter what I did. I fiddled for hours, getting more and more confused and frustrated, without even finding out if the hiss was still there, as all I could listen to were the recordings, which by their very nature are hissy all over the place anyway.

SO ... I re-installed rockbox, so I could at least work my player properly, and for a while the hissing had seemed to magically disappear.

But now, a few days ago, whilst happily using my player, the music suddenly crackled, then cut out, even though the time bar showed the track to still be playing, and volume cranked up....
Turn off player, load up again, resume... starts playing again, only to cut out in the same fashion a few minutes later.

I've worked out, that the player now does this at the slightest, but not always same kind of knock, or touch. It's very weird.

(also, tried reverting back to cowon firmware again, but same story as before, somethings screwy with it still).

So, my question to all of you is, whats going on?
Hardware problem ..... ?

And if so, how can I make my player seem completely untouched my rockbox, so as to keep my warranty
valid? Like I said, it's only 6 months old .... It's really annoying, especially as I was really enjoying the X5L/rockbox combination :(

Your help will be greatly appreciated,

Thanks alot in advance.

Please don't ask for help in defrauding the hardware manufacturers. People willingly breaking their warranty, and then lying about it, is surely part of the reason hardware manufacturers frown so much on projects such as this.

Your problem is most likely a faulty headphone jack.  This is a common problem with the X5s, unfortunately.  Search the iAudio Net X5 forums and you'll find many, many instances of the exact problem you're describing.  To verify, next time you're listening to music just give the headphones plug a little wiggle while it's plugged in and I bet you will experience the dropouts you're describing.

Good luck.
