4 gig Ipod mini 2nd gen hangs on building database
« on: January 14, 2008, 03:03:53 PM »
I installed Rockbox properly (I think) and it hangs while I am building my database  at 23. I went back and wiped the Ipod clean and started over. i am still getting the same error. initially I had music on it. It hung on 23. I took the music off and tried to install the database and it still hangs on 23. I tried both the autoinstaller and the manual installation, and it still hangs on 23. (I feel like Jim Carey) Other functions (games, font, demos) all appear to be functioning properly. I am not incredibly tech savvy, but I can follow instructions. Thanks in advance for any help.              Andrew

Seems like Eris herself has taken a fancy to your iPod. ;)

What is the SVN build you're using? Go to System > Rockbox Info to see. Also, what types of music files are on your iPod? MP3? Vorbis? FLAC?

They were mp3s, but it doesn't matter if they are on the Ipod or not. It still freezes up at 23. I can't figure out the svn. Sorry! Maybe i can't follow instructions...
I downloaded the Ipod mini 2nd gen linking from CNETs page today. SVN means subversion, correct? it isn't one of the beta type downloads. It's the one recommended. perhaps Eris is involved, but her discord is limited, and I can't see any golden apples. ;)

All current rockbox downloads (which is where the CNET link takes you) are considered beta at best. There has only ever been one release, and that doesn't run on iPods.

If the database build is hanging at the same point each time, it means that Rockbox has encountered some tag in one of your music files that it's currently unable to process. In order to find out which one it is, the best method is to copy all your music OFF your iPod (i.e. delete it from there and just have it in your computer), and then copy them back on a few at a time, and see if the Database builds correctly or not after you've done each chunk of files. In this way you can narrow down which file is causing Rockbox to choke.

For reference, the problem is *usually* embedded album artwork, which is usually quite large, and Rockbox doesn't like finding it actually in the music.

Just to clarify, there've been more than one release (2.5, 2.4 etc) but there's only been one target (or rather category of targets) that has been released for, that being the Archoses.
