iPod 30gig upgraded to 80gig - and rockbox
« on: January 12, 2008, 01:50:12 PM »
Just thought I would share my experiences.

I recently replaced my dead 30gig drive with a new 80gig drive, new bat and new headphone connector.

When I reinstalled rockbox I used the 60/80gig build.
I kept getting errors when trying to play a file.

Then I unistalled, and reinstalled the 30gig build.
Works great!

Just thought I would share incase anyone else decides to do the same.

That's because adding a larger disk doesn't increase the RAM. The build you pick is actually because of RAM but the old naming tended to confuse more people.

Thats cool jrace. I have a question that id like to get an answer from some hardware/rockbox experts. Would it be possible to change my ipods's (5.5 Gen) 80GB harddisk with one 160GB that the new ipod classic uses?

If would be possible i could give it a try.

It won't be possible without some sort of ZIF to CE-ATA interface convertor - and given the tight space inside iPods, I'm not sure where you'd put it.

Actually, I'm finding the information on the connectors confusing. They look the same - but I'm not certain that they are. I'll keep googling...

I stand by my first statement. :D

not to mention you need to compile your own build since rockbox doesnt support 160gb by default. If i recall correctly its limited to 120gb without compiling

I had a really bad experience trying to swap the disks between a 60gb 5gen and a 160gb Classic. It doesn't work at all. The worst thing was that I cut the headphone/lock wire while I was fiercely trying to open the f***ing thing for 4 hours! Don't try It! The connectors are different. My Classic has a 160gb Samsung HDD with CE-ATA interface (18 pin) . The 60gb 5gen has a Toshiba with ATA-6 Zif interface (40 pin).

Yes, they do indeed, this is known.  To see what type of disks current targets have check http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/HardDriveReplacement

Yes, but only if you can find an 120GB drive with the same drive interface.
