5g help please on installing
« on: January 10, 2008, 05:34:26 PM »
I want to get help on installing Rockbox on my 5g 30gig, but whenever i do, i get an error message that says something like cant load file not found etc. etc.  i was at school when i was first trying to put rockbox on my ipod, so i thought that it might have been the lack of admin privelages.  now that im at my home computer, which is a windows xp operating system, when i download the .rockbox file, the computer doesn't know how to open it, i chose to use internet explorer, but nothing happend.  Please help me install rockbox, i even followed the instructions letter for letter on the mac comp. but now i cant even open the file.  please feel free to email me if theres some quick fix, because i check my email more often than the message center at the site.  my email address is lukeman1850@yahoo.com

What error message?  From what program?

There is no .rockbox file available for download like that.  What do you mean?

i even followed the instructions letter for letter on the mac comp. but now i cant even open the file.

Which instructions?

I'd like to help, but I'm not psychic.  Please provide some details, and try to write them out in a clear and structured way.

from your message, it sounds like you might be trying to run one or more of the rockbox files as an installer, which I have never seen in the instructions. You also state that you have windows xp, but mention elsewhere that you 'followed the instructions letter for letter on the mac comp.' If this means you set up your ipod with itunes on the mac (or a previous owner did), you cannot run RB on it until you reformat the drive:

"Note: In addition to the requirements described above, Rockbox only works on Ipods formatted with the FAT32 filesystem (i.e., Ipods initialized by iTunes for Windows). It does not work with the HFS+ filesystem (i.e. Ipods initialized by iTunes for the Mac). More information and instructions for converting an Ipod to FAT32 can be found on the IpodConversionToFAT32 wiki page on the Rockbox website. Note that after conversion, you can still use a FAT32 Ipod on a Mac."

If you meant something else by 'mac comp.,' the instructions will tell you can go the manual route or the automated. the executable file it sounds like you want is the RB Utility, at

http://download.rockbox.org/rbutil/

the only tricky part of running the utility is getting it to recognize your ipod. I have never had a problem with this, but I have read where others have.

the manual alternative is covered in the installation instructions in the manual, with which you are already familiar. I will admit I have never been able to find a link on the instructions page to the bootloader files that are required, but if you do a search on the term, you should be able to find it.

good luck.
