Can an iPod compatible car head unit control a Rockboxed iPod?
« on: January 10, 2008, 02:58:08 AM »
I'm not sure if this has been covered before.  This is my first post.

If I get one of those car audio head units that have built in iPod controls (i.e. Alpine), will the head unit be able to control an iPod with Rockbox on it?  How about if I get one of those iPod integration kits for my car's existing OEM head unit?

Both the Alpine head units and the OEM integration kits supposedly allow you to leave your iPod in the glove box.  You can then control it through with your head unit's controls, just like controlling a trunk mounted CD changer.

If I put Rockbox on my Gen 5.5 iPod Video, will it output the necessary control signals to the head unit?

No.
Rockbox does not have drivers for the serial port on the bottom (inside the dock connector) of the iPod.
Rockbox also does not implement the Apple Accessory Protocol, the communication between the iPod and the accessory device.
Some accessories need this communication to work at all.
Some accessories are, in effect, nothing more than passive speakers, and don't need this communication to perform their job.

Thanks for the answers guys.  This is what I expected.

Just to clarify.  A Rockboxed iPod will output audio through the dock connector's line-out, correct?

Yes.
Let me answer the unasked question.
Q:  "Since we know my Rockboxed iPod outputs audio over the line-out pins of the dock connector, will audio work with (XXXXXXX) device?"

A:  Maybe.
Some devices appear to ignore the line-out, even though it is all they need, while waiting for some sort of communication or identification through Apple's Accessory Protocol.  Again, look at the wiki page I quoted earlier, some devices which instinct say should work, don't.
