iPod 4 Gen Battery issues

I installed Rockbox on my 4th Gen 20 GB iPod, the install went as planned.  Rockbox was installed.  I put more .mp3's on it and everything was good.  I tried it out with my iHome unit, the remote didn't work to goto the next song but it played.  No problems, yet...  In the morning I removed it from the iHome and it was completely dead.  I guessing that it wouldn't charge on the iHome unit and it drained the battery.  I charged the unit using the outlet charger and firewire cable, all day.  Still no luck.  When I do the reboot (Hold on/off - Selct & Menu)  I get a small battery with a triangle with a ! inside it.  If I try to charge it with the USB cable and reboot I get a larger battery meter, but it is not moving (animated like it is charging).  Has anyone seen this?  I thinking my battery is toasted, any ideas?

Thanks for all of the information everyone.............  I can now get my iPod to some what boot, still no power...
