FLAC to iPod (generation 3) - How to make it work?
« on: January 09, 2008, 10:49:04 AM »
Hello

I installed Rockbox on my iPod generation 3 and it works well on the files already there. There's one thing, however, that I don't understand. How do I transfer FLAC files to the iPod so they can be played using Rockbox?

It doesn't work using MediaMonkey as a medium, and I have tried to directly copy the FLAC files to the iPod via Windows Explorer, with no luck.

I apologize if this has been answered before, but I have searched and couldn't find any obvious answer.

Sincerely,
Tegüder

Copy and paste is how you do it.

What was the error when you tried to do that with Explorer?

I found the files now. I originally copied the files to the .rockbox directory, but now I tried to copy them directly to the iPod/ directory. I found the files under Files when I started the iPod, but they didn't contain ID3 tags (even though MediaMonkey thinks they do). Additionally, the files are under Files, while the MP3s are under Database. Are there any way to incorporate the FLAC files into the Database?

Thanks for answering  :)

Putting them in the .rockbox directory isn't recommended as it is hidden by default.  You don't need to put them in the iPod_control folder either (although you can if you want), just put them wherever you like.

FLAC files shouldn't contain ID3 tags, but vorbis tags.  If your ripping software has wrongly attached ID3 tags, that'll be why they are showing as untagged.  Try replacing the ID3 tags with vorbis tags.  They should then appear in the database (my guess is they are currently under untagged in the database).  You may have to manually update or re-initialise the database.
