I need help with 4th gen Apple iPod from HP
« on: January 09, 2008, 06:03:27 PM »
OK, in short, I repair a few iPods I buy on eBay and resell them for some income. My latest iPod purchase (well, the latest one that came in the mail I should say) is a 20GB 4th gen iPod with the HP branding.

The issue i'm having with it (and this was said in the auction) is that.. it won't turn on.

Nothing. Nada. Zip.

I've tried:

1) Connecting with FireWire cable to PC
2) Connecting with USB cable to PC
3) Connecting with FireWire cable to Apple branded wall charger
4) Connecting with USB to Griffin branded car USB adaptor.

Nothing ever happens in either of these situations. Nothing appears on the screen, the hard drive doesn't start to move, nothing happens.

1) Yes, I'm positive hold is off.
2) I've tried a quick reset (6-10 seconds)
3) I've tried an extended reset (30 seconds)
4) I've left it plugged in for over 24 hours

I can't get into Disk Mode or Diagnostic Mode since I can't get it to do ANYTHING.

I'm sure the hard drive is fine. To test it, I put it in an iPod photo I had laying around, restored it, and loaded data onto it. The hard drive runs, performs, and sounds beautiful.

I'm going to blame the fact that nothing is happening on the iPod's logic board. Assuming that that is the case, is it possible for me to attempt to revive it somehow? Is it possible for me to wake the iPod up from its apparently permanent sleep? You guys seem to know much more than I do about how the iPod's internals actually work, so I thought this may be a good place to ask.

Thanks for any help!

Could the battery be completely dead? If it's completely dead (no voltage at all) it might not turn on no matter what.

I've tried two different batteries, and nothing happens to the iPod with either battery.

Then it sounds like you have a totally bricked iPod.  :(

Broken perhaps.  Bricked implies a software problem, broken hardware to my mind.

That's what I figured.

At least I can use it's harddrive. That makes the price I paid for it worth it. (I paid like $35 for it)
