Help i think i have ruined my ipod!

It only doesn't work on iPods which are damaged hardware wise in some ways.

i got the same message on my ipod, but just consider it calmly, and dont panic.  if you used a mac to install rockbox, the just start to run the installing process again, then, instead of pressing i then "enter" in the terminal, just press u then "enter" instead, this will uninstall rockbox, and you will have to just reboot your ipod

Isn't disk mode part of the OF boot loader?  Couldn't it be damaged somehow?

Some kind of strange damage that leaves it able to attempt to boot Rockbox but unable to boot disk mode...

If you iPod is well enough to attempt to start Rockbox, then it's well enough to start disk mode - you're just doing it wrong.
