Just some questions regarding the music database
« on: January 07, 2008, 11:41:58 PM »
Playing Music while playing rockboy and initialising database + themes on a 5th Gen iPod Video 30GB
--------------
1. Currently the only way I can play music is by browsing the hidden folders on rockbox. The folders are scrambled and it isn't a very effective way of browsing/playing audio files. I tried to initialise the database but never worked. Just kept saying Building Database 0 found. I have the correct firmware and Windows XP on my laptop. I've tried deleting the database files and reloading them but to no avail. I have almost 2500 songs, another user said this was too many, is that true? If so what can I do about it.

2. When I play MP3's (using the iPod_control folder from rockbox) I can't seem to able to listen to my music and play rockboy at the same time (rockboy emulator music is very poor quality).

3. I have some themes downloaded from a rockbox theme site and put them in the appropriate folder with the appropriate patches, but everytime I try to change the theme all it does (if anything) is change the colour of the background, now playing screens etc. are all the boring old same thing. I am new to Rockbox but not iPod modding. Any help would be very much appreciated

Ben

2)  Its not possible to use audio codecs and rockboy at the same time on the Ipods since they both need the same IRAM.  If you want to do that, you'll need to buy a Gigabeat.

1) 2500 is not too many songs for the database. The problem lies elsewhere. If you have all the mp3s on your computer still, an alternative option would be to wipe your ipod and copy them over in normal directory structure. I don't have a lot of experience with the database (though I've never had this problem)...

3) It sounds like you're using special (and likely outdated) themes that require patched builds. Patches aren't something you can just drop into a theme to get new features; they're used to patch the source code, from which you can make a custom build. Have a look at the unsupported builds forum to learn more.

thanks guys for your help, the fact that I can't use rockbox at the same time means I won't really have a need for (1) as I use my iPod (which already has a theme modded to it) to listen to music. And thanks ryran for your advice about themes, I will look into this.

Gracias/Thank you (I speak fluent english, but it helps to speak some spanish because I'm trying to learn it to impress a certain someone :P)

P.S. I won't lock this yet in case someone else has some advice

Your database issue may have something to do with your modded iPod firmware (from iPodWizard?) or the content on your iPod.  I had a similar database issue about a month ago after adding some tracks using SharePod.  The only solution that fixed it was a restore on my iPod (un-modded original firmware).  It was a pain to have to add all my content again but I haven't had a database issue since I restored.  Assuming that you have the proper Database settings enabled in Rockbox, I'd recommend doing a restore.

Just out of curiosity, were you able to install Rockbox using iPodPatcher per the Rockbox manual, or did you have to use the iPodLoader for iPodLinux?

it sounds like you are using ipodwizard. Im not too sure but it may cause conflicts with rockbox, but then again when I had mine (IPW w/ 6g split screen  mod) I had no problems. When initializing a database, it takes some time.

I don't have iPod Linux; just the iPod patcher thingy. It's not much of a problem since the only real time I use rockbox is to play GameBoy games...
