VMware File Locations
« on: January 07, 2008, 09:21:02 PM »
I started using VMware today, and I built a new rockbox.zip, I now want to take that rockbox.zip from VMware and have it in windows.  Where is the default file location VMware is storing all the files it downloads from the SVN and whatnot?  Or is that not the way VMware works?

Thanks
-Justin

VMWare works as a virtual computer. If you actually go to browse your network, you should see that it's sharing the files.

Like just go to "My Network Places"?  Nothing appears to be populating yet, do you have to enable the sharing somewhere or is it on by default?

It's on by default. Try going to view your "Workgroup." I don't remember where the button for this is though, (assuming I guessed which version of windows you have, because it varies among these too). It may not be in the same workgroup as you, but you should be able to browse your network and get to it.

Yea, I know what you mean "View Workgroup computer".  I think theres something wrong with my windows file sharing. But when i get it working, there will be just a Vmware computer sitting in the workgroup, and when i click on it, i'll get to browse my vmware home directory?

Basically, yes.

If you click "View Workgroup Computers" it'll show computers in YOUR workgroup though. You may need to go up a level and see if a second workgroup is visible, as your default one may not be the same as the default one for the VMWare "computer."

cool, yea i tried doing the "Add Network Place" where you can have it look for all workgroups connected, still nothing. I've never had good luck with windows file sharing for some reason. Sometimes it works great, other times it doesn't work at all.   I'll figure it out eventually, as long as i know thats how you get the files everything will be cool.

Thanks alot, this thing is building sooo much faster than cygwin.  Its amazing

Try typing \\debian\user into the explorer address bar. If that doesn't work, restart the virtual machine.

If you can ping the virtual machine's IP, it might be that samba isn't started for some reason ("/etc/init.d/samba restart" to [re]start it).  If you can't ping it, I'd say you've got a firewall blocking you, or VMware's networking thingy isn't working/set up right.

VMWare is finicky. Especially if you've ever quit it by just clicking the X in the corner, rather than telling the computer to shut down. I've found restarting the whole virtual computer is actually necessary every now and then.

Yea same, I can get a good 4-5 quick shutdowns before Samba stops working and I have to restart.

Sometimes restarting Samba is enough, as the earlier user suggested, by the way. But I found that sometimes it was easier to just restart the whole thing, if I couldn't pinpoint where the problems were happening.
