Replacement drive
« on: November 16, 2004, 11:25:53 AM »
Hi all - this site is so helpful ;D
I have had the Fm Recorder v2 for about 18 months
I have had battery issues (replaced with a 2800mAh-New Technology Battery)

But...I have the dreaded Hitachi 20GB Hard drive which locks while out and about

Question? ???

Should I replace the old HD with a Fujitsu 80Gb as suggested on another post?
If so , which model number?

Does it matter what buffer size the Hard Drive has?

and the spin speed?
I love my Archos(sometimes!) especially when it behaves itself ! :-\

Any ideas, suggestions would be most appreciated

My understanding is that you want as low a spin speed as possible for power purposes, since it will not matter to the performance of the drive.  Other than that, I believe anything you get should be fine in terms of buffer speed, model number etc.  But Fujitsus seem to be the way to go, the Hitachi in mine makes all kinds of bad noises and I'm going to replace it asap.

Thanks for your response
My Hitachi sound like a food mixer  :o
Looks like the Fujitsu is the way to go!

I put a Hitachi Travelstar 80GN 80GB, Art.Nr. IC25N080ATMR04
with 4200 rpm, 8 MB buffer
Works quite well.

It's fairly easy. And no, I won't email you. This is a forum. If I email you, only you will have the answer, if I respond here everybody can see it.

Pthump,

If you browse the forums there are several that describe the process and one includes pictures posted by myself of the process.  It's better to browse the forums because chances are you'll learn more than you would if someone just emailed you.  I went with the 100 GB Toshiba, no problems and about half full already.

Good luck,

Fred M
