Sansa E260: Buzzing when switching between folders
« on: January 04, 2008, 12:23:49 PM »
When using Rockbox, I generally listen to one album after another (have it set to "Auto-change directory").  However, upon switching from one album/folder to another, I receive a buzzing sound.  To stop the buzzing, I must pause the music, wait a few seconds for the buzzing to subside, and then resume the song.  The remainder of the songs will play without the buzzing until the album/folder changes again.

I also seem to get this buzzing when I "Stop" and resume a song.  However, if I "Pause" and resume the song, the problem doesn't exist.

I'm not sure if it's just my player or a Rockbox issue.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

This sounds like a fairly typical description of the low-level noise inherent to the hardware of the Sansa E200 series.  This noise is present (even in the original firmware) whenever the flash memory is accessed.  Every situation you described is a buffering situation (when data is read from the flash into the RAM buffer.)
The noise most likely is also occurring during album playback as well (unless all your folders are sub 30MB in size), but masked by the audio playback.
I probably shouldn't have mentioned that last bit - as now you'll be listening for it - and will hear it - and be annoyed. ;)
The buffering noise is often described as being at a constant level regardless of where you have the volume set, making it most noticeable during initial track load or quiet passages.  It has also been described as worse the lower the impedance of your headphones.

Thanks for the info.  I must admit that I do not hear it unless during playback I do not take the time to"pause" and resume the song.  This seems to do the trick, but can be a little annoying.

I'm I am using a pair of Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro headphones and the impedance is 21 ohms.  I'm not sure if this is good or not.  I guess it can't be bad for this style of headphones, but I'm not sure.
