You can fast forward and rewind in it.  If you use MPEGPlayer, then yes, upgrade.

Works amazingly! Much better than I thought it would be, and it works perfectly on every video that I've tried. ;D But maybe have a different option for video seeking because most of my video files are much longer than my audio files and it takes a while to seek more than half an hour, even with acceleration set to 2x/2s.

i always wanted to use the video player in my rockbox but it was too annoying to skip parts, or to start from the middle of the file. now i finally can!!! i love you developers!!!

Excellent work indeed!  How about having FF/RW move at twice the specified rate (or say, 1 minute intervals) if done while video is in 'paused' state?

Some people would actually prefer Paused to allow you to advance frame by frame.

I think the best solution is probably to take the old menu for setting a start position, and use it as a 'Go To' option in the menu.

Has mpegplayer improved to the point where skipping frames is no longer necessary?

That depends on what player you have. But I think its still needed. even on the gigabeat.

As a note: YOU SHOULD NOT DISABLE IT. Even though it's not necessary, on average, high bitrate or high complexity portions may still need it, and it can lose sync temporarily (and take a while to regain sync) if you leave it disabled. Basically, "skip frames" should be an always-on option, and is mostly there so that it can be disabled for testing purposes.

It uses 1min intervals in the mini preview from the start menu if you use up/down (for players where the key is mapped).

Yes, I misunderstood the question.  I thought the question was about whether the targets were fast enough.  As llorean says, leave the option skip frames on.

Yeah, I'm not sure if the question was "Will it skip frames" or "Can I turn the option off", but the option should always be on. If it doesn't need to skip frames, it just won't skip any. :)
