Computer does not recognize Sansa (was: help?)
stavromulla:
Hi and sorry for the multiple posts, just thought I'd keep the chain of events continuous.
To cut a long story short, after installing and deinstalling rockbox, I can only mount the sandisc on my mac when I hold the left button down. Sometimes it won't do it, and I have to resort to aforementioned guerillatactics (recovery mode, disk utility, eject 16MB USB partition that won't show in the finder, restart) to get it going again. I can get into recovery mode on a pc.
So, I can't get the sandisk to start in recovery mode to reset to the original software on my mac. I have read the relevant sections in the wiki, and could not find anything that relates to this problem.
3 Questions:
1) What can I do to make it mount in recovery mode on my mac?
2) how do I find out if I have a European or an American make?
3) would it help if I reinstalled Rockbox?
Thanks again for all answers, MarcGuay, the info about the system restart is already gratefully received!!
MarcGuay:
I just searched google for "sansa e280 macintosh compatible" and this is not a Rockbox related problem. The player just doesn't like your computer very much and the hit-and-miss connecting is a common problem. Sorry.
stavromulla:
Hm, I just did the same (google) and only found one entry in an amazon discussion forum where this problem was mentioned...
I still suspect that it has something to do with rockbox, and I'd like to do the recovery on a PC now. How do I find out if I have an american or a European one? It was a gift, so I don't know. It doesn't have an fm function, which I read makes it likely to be a European.
Thanks again for answers!
MarcGuay:
Does the player function now as it did when you got it? Does the Sansa firmware have the same USB problems as Rockbox?
Just found your answers here:

Not a Rockbox problem.
As for finding out where your player is from, I think the last letter of the existing OF indicates the region... Sticking with the same series is apparently a good idea, but if you have a European edition with the FM radio hardware disabled, it's possible that using a different version will allow you to use it...

Marc,
thank you soo much, that really helps!
The player seems to be working just fine, if the Sansa firmware has the same problems, I can't say - seemed to work fine on the PC, but can't try on the Mac.
the solution is apparently to downgrade the firmware, or to switch back and forth between MTP and MSC mode. http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7037 (posting 9).
I'll try and reinstall rockbox now, let's see what happens...
