'Unknown' Tags when ID3V2 tags are present
« on: December 24, 2007, 06:57:15 PM »
Hi,

With some albums I seem to have problems with Rockbox reading the ID3v2 tags.

I have used a tag editor (MP3Tag and dvPoweramp) to set the tags (ID3v2.3).  The info showing up in the tag has the same fields, and same tag types as files and albums that are showing up in the database without problems.

But, for some reason, these albums always end up in the untagged folder.  The albums and track names are showing up fine in the Sansa firmware, it seems the tags are just not being read by Rockbox.  This is with several versions of rockbox (digibuild, Chris', and the 'regular' rockbox).

It's a pain having to boot into the Sansa firmware to listen to these 2 or 3 albums.

Anyone else have this problem or know of a fix?

Rebuild the database?  Maybe it's holding on to the old information even if you're updating the files.  Check out the database settings menu...

I've had this occur very infrequently over the years, with a handful of files.  I could never figure it out, and "fixed" the issue by re-ripping the tunes from my CD.

A test file or two could be useful, to see if it is a bug (or maybe a lack of bug-compatibility) in the ID3V2 parser in Rockbox.

Hi, this is my first post on the forums... I got Rockbox recently and am loving it more and more (with the help of the promising Cabbie 2.0 theme and my current read-through of the "f*cking manual" as it's been referred. Just thought I'd say that this happens to me as well, with more than one format of audio. Lear, I can definitely provide sample files if you'd like them... if this really is a bug I'd love to help crush it!

We're always interested in fixing bugs - so please do provide example files, ideally accompanied by a bug report on the bug tracker, so it doesn't get lost in these forums:

I'll file a bug report in a bit... what should I do to provide these files? Email them to someone? Link them up here? What works best for you guys?

I'm under the impression I've found the problem(s) on my end... it seems that the files I ripped recently to mp3 (I used Sound Juicer) were tagged using ID3v2.4.0, which ended up not being recognised by Rockbox or Gnome, even while they were displayed in programs such as Audacious and Amarok. I used the program Kid3 to convert the tags to ID3v2.3.0 and they are now recognised by gnome and rockbox.

Then I found some files that had had 2.4.0 tags which were displaying in gnome but not rockbox, which confused me... but Kid3 showed me that for each of these tags the files also had ID3v1.1 tags, so gnome must be falling back on this when it doesn't interpret the 2.4.0 tags properly, something that rockbox apparently isn't programmed to do (just from what I'm seeing). (EDIT: changing these files from 2.4.0 to 2.3.0 fixed these files as well)

So essentially what I'm concluding from this is that Rockbox doesn't know how to handle ID3v2.4.0 tags. Is this true?

Weird. Not sure why/how I had and subsequently fixed that problem over here, then...

I would surely like to have one of your 2.4.0 files for analysis.

Here you go... this is one I ripped using sound juicer. It shows up fully tagged in said program, as well as audacious and amarok. It shows up as untagged in gnome, and for some reason shows up untagged in the rockbox database.

Could very well just be my system, but it still seems like a very weird thing to be happening.

Interesting. It uses some ID3V2 features that are rarely used in my (somewhat limited) experience. There is bug in how one of these features were handled. I think I know how to fix it, but I better test a bit to try to make sure I don't break other files.  :)

Yay, I'm not crazy! I hope whatever your idea is works out, glad I could help you out with the example file.
